Integrative Biology 130 Bio-Inspired Design

Description: The course examines the fundamentals of bio-inspired design as an innovation strategy, translating biological principles of function, performance, and aesthetics into human technologies. The creative design process is driven by interdisciplinary exchange among engineering, biology, medicine, art, architecture, and business. Diverse student teams will create and present original bio-inspired designs. Through an iterative process, teams gain hands-on experience synthesizing multidisciplinary perspectives into cohesive solutions, modeling the collaborative dynamics that drive real-world innovation. Lectures address the biomimicry design process from original scientific breakthroughs to entrepreneurial start-ups using successful case studies.
